Staff-Ride in the Ardennes

This week I have co-organised a Staff-Ride for a course on land operations and tactics for the Higher Command and Staff Program at the Swedish Defence University together with Lieutenant Colonel Per Lindahl, Head of the Land Operations Division. It was a very successful trip where we used five different themes – Offensive/Defensive, Division/Command, Technology, tactics, and Logistics – as a starting point for discussions and seminars at various themed terrain locations.

We also spent a day studying and reflecting on the consequences of the profession, leadership, courage and symbolic values during a visit to Verdun.

Speaking on Ukraine & Urban Warfare

Today I was participating in a panel on Ukraine as part of our Strategic Leadership Development education (“Strategisk Chefsutveckling (SCU)”). I spoke on the Urban Warfare dimension, sharing some of the findings of a forthcoming book chapter in a forthcoming edited volume on Advanced Land Warfare: Tactics and Operations (Oxford University Press, forthcoming) that I am editing together with Assoc. Prof. Niklas Nilsson.

Excellent audience! Excellent questions!

Scouting forthcoming staff-ride/field excersise

Together with two of my colleges I conducted scouting and planning for a forthcoming staff-ride/field exercise in the Netherlands and Germany. the focus is on tactics and pedagogics, using Operation Market Garden and Operation Veritable as objects of study.

It was a very successful trip, creating insights essential before conducting the sharp exercise in  November (hint: the overpass is being developed creating a radically new approach) as well as a lot of new pedagogical ideas that we will develop further.

Practical Examination and the Examination of Practice

New article on Practical Examination and the Examination of Practice when teaching war studies to cadets and officers (and others) in The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences Proceedings and Journal. In Swedish, but if interested send a message.

Abstract:
The ability to lead armed combat is central to an officer. It is clear that the military professionis about more than possessing theoretical knowledge. Thus, in order to achieve an educationalprogram that includes the skills and abilities of the military profession there is a need to lookbeyond traditional written examination and apply practical examination in various forms. In this article we argue that while all practice can and should be examined through practicalexamination, not everything that is practically examined has to be practice. More specifically, this article will focus on the possibilities and limitations with practical examination. Focuswill be on the education of officers within the context of war studies. The article approachesthe issue on the basis of the legal framework for higher education in Sweden, research onteaching and learning in higher education and practice at the Swedish Defence University. Theoverall purpose is to understand practical examination with regard to what is allowed, howit is done with judicial security, and how it can be done in practice. The article also discusseswhat should be practically examined and how this should be done.
